Abstract:

Stephen C. Angel had translated the core idea “Li” (理) in Neo-Confucianism as “Coherence,” which denotes “the valuable, intelligible that things fit together.” Virtually, with his translation Angel had made the redefinition of Li, and his idea of Li is inclined to Wang Chuanshan’s (王船山) idea instead of Zhu Xi (朱熹) or Wang Yangming’s (王阳明) he strongly relied to develop his Confucian theory. As the result, he had to downplay the ontological aspect and the immanent aspect of the expressions in the sources he applied. This article will reveal how Angel’s critical interpretation had leapt away from the original ideas in the source texts, and illustrated how his theory of moral cultivation could have been implying the external factors could have been the obstruction to moral improvement.
