6th Workshop, April 15, 2017: "Rethinking Nationalism, Patriotism, and Cosmopolitanism: A Confucian Perspective"
Rethinking Nationalism, Patriotism, and Cosmopolitanism: A Confucian Perspective
Guoxiang Peng
(Distinguished Professor, Zhejiang University)
Abstract
Inspired by the arguments of Love for Country, this talk intends to rethink nationalism, patriotism, and cosmopolitanism and their relations from the perspective of Chinese tradition and Confucianism in particular. In my view, the Confucian standpoint on this issue could be regarded as a rooted cosmopolitanism or a cosmopolitan patriotism, which is helpful to unlock or at least loosen the entanglement of nationalism, patriotism, and cosmopolitanism.
