Abstract: Like all figures in the republican tradition that dates from classical Rome, Rousseau upholds the value of non-domination or, as he prefers to put it, non-dependence. But his interpretation of the tradition is heavily influenced by the absolutist tradition of Jean Bodin and Thomas Hobbes. This influence warped the ideal of the republic and generated a novel version of republican thought that still has a presence today.
