In this paper, I will first elaborate on the very notion of representation as being fundamentally linked to struggles for changes in the social hierarchy. I will question representation in relation with notions of public sphere, of visibility and of arrangements of mediation. What happens when people get together, when they act and speak together? This question is at the heart of Annah Arendt’s understanding of notions of the ‘public sphere’. For Arendt, when « people get together in the form of speech and action » these dynamics precedes the constitution of « the public sphere and of any form of government » (Arendt, Conditions de l’homme moderne). Hence, the very dynamics of the formation of spaces for association and for discussion – is itself an object of struggles revolving over the sites of public expression, over the types of action and the various scales of their visibility – somehow connecting « what is going on both inside and outside these spaces » (Merrifield 2012) – and over the types of categories of language used. In the second part of the paper, drawing on a wide range of sources (popular literature, interviews, etc.) I will review how representations of rural migrant workers have changed in the course of the reform era, tracing the changes in paradigms of representation. I shall document how various modes of cultural practices - popular literature, press accounts, songs – about and by rural migrant workers revolving around ‘dagong’ (打工) have changed from the late 1980s on. I propose to conceive of these cultural practices as constitutive of ‘networks of practices and communities of interpretations’ (Chartier) where identity-making is being shaped and struggled for.
