Abstract:

Connecting politics and morality is usually understood as an attempt to constrain politics with morality. Since Machiavelli, however, it has been regarded as impossible to condition and constrain autonomously existing politics with certain pre-determined, fundamentally justifiable moral norms. The whole history of ethics also shows that such norms do not exist. To ask how politics is to be moral can be a meaningful inquiry when we focus on the principles of living together by means of politics. In this context, morality means the principles of co-existence and the willingness to live up to them. Man is believed to be equipped to live morally, and the political realm is where the moral equipment is embodied. When we focus on proper ways of participating in the political realm, we can find a way in which politics can keep social agents to maintain moral attitudes. This approach implies a criticism of the liberal understanding of human agency, freedom, and equality.
