Abstract:
In contemporary philosophy and societies, there is an increasing concern about the rights of animals. Equally, in contemporary philosophy and societies, there is a concern on not propagating racist and classist ideologies. Nevertheless, these two concerns sometimes clash. In particular, worries about the rights of animals may sometimes be expressed and institutionalized in ways that favor dominant groups in society while neglecting the interests of those who are dominated. In this article, I evaluate to what extent two approaches to animals - animal welfarism and animal abolitionism - engage in a racist and classist logic. I contend that both do this: welfarism does so by using racist and classist concepts of “humane treatment” and “necessary use”, while abolitionism contributes by imposing veganism as a universal norm. I end the article by suggesting a framework by which to address these tensions.
