Political Philosophy Workshop第三讲:Human Security as Ontological Security

Professor Shani delivered a paper at the Department of Philosophy (Zhuhai) on the 17th November 2016. Professor Shani offered an argument for taking a postocolonial approach to security, which would imply decolonizing concepts of security as well as including specific identities in concepts and decisions.
Dr. Rodrigues was the respondent and questioned whether it would be possible to hold a postcolonial approach to security, and that there is a high risk of essentialisation of cultural groups if this is done. Professor Kwak, who was the moderator, posed some questions regarding the concept of agency used in the text and, specifically asked if this was a structural concept of agency. Further Professor Kwak suggested that this view of agency should be abandoned.
Dr. Beaumont questioned whether the distinction between two kinds of liberty made by Professor Shani has the implications teased out in the paper. Dr. He asked whether the concept of identity was too individualistic and if we could instead conceptualise in game-theoretical terms.  Dr. Wang asked whether it was the case that it would be an implication that all cultures would end up endorsing a Western concept of security.
Various students posed questions at the end. The undergraduate student Huang Haozhe enquired on how individuals make choices about religion today. Master students were also very interested in the topic. Ou Runjie asked about the role of media regarding questions of security. Hu Xiaolu asked how to link Professor Shani’s argument with globalization.
We thank Professor Shani for the very insightful article and all the participants and collaborators for their invaluable contribution.
