中山大学哲学系(珠海)成功举办亚洲宗教与民族主义国际研讨会

On November 19-20 Department of Philosophy (Zhuhai) held the 2016 Routledge International Conference on Religion and Nationalism in Asia. The conference provided an opportunity for the contributors to Volume VIII of the Routledge Series of Political Theories in an East Asian Context to meet to present their works-in-progress and to finalize the details of the text prior to its publication.

The editor of the series, Professor Jun-Hyeok Kwak, began the proceedings by thanking the distinguished guests for their attendance. Department Chair, Professor Chen then provided the attendees with an introduction to Department of Philosophy(Zhuhai), and set out its goal to become a world-class, internationally oriented, research center for the study of Political Philosophy, Comparative Philosophy, and Religious Studies. Professor Kwak then provided an update on the progress of the series, noting that Volumes V-VII will be published next year, and that there is the possibility of publishing up to twenty volumes in total.

The first session of the conference was focused on Theory. It featured two papers: one by the editor of the volume, Professor Giorgio Shani, on “The Nation as Political Theology: Colonialism, Religion, and Nationalism in South Asia”, and another by Professor Kwak on “Religious Nationalism with Reciprocal Non-domination: Ahn Chango’s Humanitarian Cosmopolitanism”. A response was then provided by Dr. Luis Rodrigues, a Research Fellow at Department of Philosophy (Zhuhai).

The second session was focused on Historical Appropriations and featured papers by Professor Wei Hua on “Augustine, the Donatists and Religious Nationalism: History and Reflection”, Professor Takashi Kibe on “The Irony of Secularist Nation-Building in Japanese Modernity: Inoue Kowashi and Fukuzawa Yukichi”, and Professor Atsuko Ichijo on “Political Modernity in East Asia: Religion, Nationalism, and the Subversion of Imperialism”. A response was then provided by Dr. Tim Beaumont, a Research Associate at Department of Philosophy (Zhuhai).

The third and final session focused on Empirical Questions and featured papers by Professor Zhibin Xie on “The Structural Problem of Religious Freedom in China: Towards a Confucian‐
Christian Synthesis”, Professor Chih-yu Shih on “Post-Chinese Reconnections through Religion: Confucianism, Buddhism, and Christianity”, and Professor Kosuke Shimizu on “Buddhism, Cosmology, and the Great East Asian Co-prosperity Area: Contradictory relations of Multiculturalism and Nationalism in the Pre-war period Japan” . A response was then provided by Shi-Chi LAN, Associate Professor of History, National Chengchi University.

One theme which dominated the discussion was the significance of each of the participants’ contributions for the questions of whether and, if so, how militant nationalism may be regulated in East Asia. By extension the participants grappled with the question of the relationship between religion, nationalism, and the appropriate normative foundation for maintaining peaceful co-existence in the region in the 21st century.
