ABSTRACT
The vulnerability figure, in The Prince, is the prince himself: the word “ruinare” (to ruin) is used to convey the message that to run a principality is a dangerous (if exciting) game. The reasons for the prince’s vulnerability are the power of fortuna and the general leaning toward evil that human beings display. While the former is linked with an intense notion of contingency, (which can be tracked back all the way to Petrarch), the latter is required for Machiavelli’s assumption that is possible to know the universal laws of politics (evil is predictable). This seems to create an efficacy paradox. The ruler must know that his political practice is bound to achieve some kind of legitimacy only because of itself and its own efficacy (there is no natural law in Machiavelli); on the other hand, in order to conceptualize that successful practice, it must be possible to claim that it radiates from adherence to a given rule that sheds light on the world of politics despite the power of fortuna.
