ABSTRACT
The concept of the statesman has largely disappeared from political theory. The term seems old-fashioned as well as gendered, but democratic societies cannot afford to do without statesmen and women. The problem is that the term has become muddled and we have lost the ability to identify statesmen when they appear. In particular, how does the statesman differ from the revolutionary leader and the demagogue? This paper attempts to provide a typology of leadership types arguing that the democratic or constitutional statesman remains an enduring model of civic excellence.
