Title: What a Powerful World: Dispositional Properties as the best Description of the Fundamental Elements of the Physical Reality

(This talk is dedicated to powers in science, in a broad sense; the goal and rationale for this talk is to introduce "outsiders" to a variety of metaphysical and epistemological issues arising from the application of dispositional notions in science.)

安德鲁·罗斯里博士于2024年7月加入中山大学哲学系（珠海）。 他于2018年毕业于罗马第三大学，获科学哲学博士学位。 他专攻时间哲学、科学哲学与形而上学，同时也涉猎与意识、基础物理学以及科学理论的真实性相关的议题。 他在主流分析哲学期刊如 Erkenntnis ， Synthese ， the European Journal for the Philosophy of Science 和 Behavioral and Brain Sciences 发表论文多篇。 他曾是牛津大学“潜能的分体论”研究小组成员，并在牛津大学与杜伦大学承担过教学工作。

Introduction of the Speaker

Dr. Andrea Roselli joined the Department of Philosophy (Zhuhai) at Sun Yat-Sen University as Postdoctoral Research Associate in July 2024. He completed his PhD in Philosophy of Science in 2018 at the University of Rome 3. He specializes in Philosophy of Time, Philosophy of Science, and Metaphysics. He is interested in topics regarding consciousness, fundamental physics, and the truthfulness of scientific theories. He has published in leading analytic philosophy journals such as Erkenntnis , Synthese , the European Journal for the Philosophy of Science, and  Behavioral and Brain Sciences. Before joining Sun Yat-Sen University, dr. Roselli taught at Durham University (UK) as a teaching associate and at Oxford University (UK) as part of the Oxford-based 'Mereology of Potentiality' research group.

摘要

近年来，基本性开始在形而上学和科学哲学中占据核心地位。 许多形而上学家认为，要完整地解释实在，仅指出“什么存在”还不够，还需说明它们是如何联系起来的。 同时，科学哲学家也逐渐认识到，物理学的许多领域（如人们所说的“基础物理学”）可能依赖于特定的形而上学框架。 本次讲座试图处理一些与此相关的、尚未得到解决的问题，并帮助人们更好地理解“力的本体论”这一哲学观点及其与科学的相关性。

Abstract

In recent years, fundamentality have come to occupy a central place in both metaphysics and the philosophy of science. Many metaphysicians now think that, in giving a complete account of reality, saying what exists is only part of the story－we also need to say how everything “hangs together.” Meanwhile, philosophers of science have begun to appreciate that much of physics (for example) － including theories in so-called “fundamental physics” － may depend on the metaphysical framework chosen. This talk is meant to address some of these open questions and to offer a better understanding of the philosophical view called “powers ontology” and its relevance to science.
