Abstract

In a 1514 letter to his friend, Francesco Vettori, Machiavelli says he has “abandoned thoughts of great and grave things” as well as “reading ancient things or reasoning about modern things,” the very thoughts and activities that had recently occupied him while completing The Prince. This stark repudiation of any concern for grave matters in favor of the light matters of love startles any reader of Machiavelli’s famous military, historical and political works. Could such light matters be of real, perhaps even ultimate, significance for understanding Machiavelli’s thought and life as a whole? This talk will consider this “other Machiavelli” along with the more familiar Machiavelli in the same spirit he himself marveled at the life of Lorenzo de’ Medici: “considering both his light, voluptuous life and his grave one, two different persons were seen existing within him, conjoined in an almost impossible combination” (Florentine Histories 8.36).

在1514年致朋友弗朗切斯科·韦托里（Francesco Vettori）的一封信中，马基雅维利表明他已“放弃了对宏大严肃事物的思考”以及“不再阅读古人之事或讨论今人之事”，而这些正是他最近在写《君主论》时一直从事的思考和活动。 对于那些读过马基雅维利著名的军事、历史和政治著作的人来说，他这种从对严肃事务的全然抛弃到对爱这种轻松事务的关注之转变，让人感到惊讶。 这些轻松的事务对理解马基雅维利的思想和整个人生来说是否具有真正的、甚至是终极的意义？本讲将同时审视“另一个马基雅维利”以及那个我们更为熟悉的马基雅维利，就像他自己对洛伦佐·德·美第奇（Lorenzo de’ Medici）的生活感到惊奇一样： “考虑到他轻松享乐的生活和他严肃的生活，他内心似乎存在着两个不同的人，以一种几乎不可能的方式结合在一起。 ”（《佛罗伦萨史》第八卷第三十六章）。
