This lecture will preview some of the argument of the author’s “Liberalism Against Itself: Cold War Intellectuals and the Making of Our Times” (2023), with a particular focus on political theorist Judith Shklar’s reservations about liberalism in her youth, and the proximity of Cold War liberalism to both neoliberalism and neoconservatism. Returning to how liberalism was disfigured in the origins of the first Cold War prompts a burning question: how to avoid a similar outcome as a new Cold War looms.

本次讲座旨在概述本人在《自由主义的自我对抗： 冷战知识分子与我们时代的塑造》（2023年）一书中的主要论点，着重探讨政治理论家朱迪斯·施克莱（Judith Shklar）在其年轻时对自由主义的疑虑，以及分析冷战自由主义与新自由主义、新保守主义之间的密切关系。 回溯自由主义在第一次冷战时期是如何被扭曲的，促使我们思索这样一个亟待解决的问题： 在新一轮冷战逐渐逼近的情况下，我们如何避免类似的结局。
