ABSTRACT:
This talk is based on Chapter 3 of my book, Origins of Moral-Political Philosophy in Early China (Oxford University Press, 2021). The role of the Laozi in the intellectual landscape of early Chinese moral-political philosophy has not been properly appreciated, partly due to the anachronistic labeling of it as a daojia text which takes it outside its pre-Qin context. I argue that the singular contribution of the Laozi lies in its new understanding of Heaven and its drastic reorientation of the Heaven-human relationship in the subsequent Chinese moral-political discourse. This would set the stage for the most consequential development in Chinese political history, namely the drastic bureaucratization and naturalization of the state with impartiality enshrined as the political norm for the state in the hands of the fajia thinkers. The Laozi was an extraordinarily influential text in the context of pre-Qin Chinese philosophy: its wuwei project both “succeeded” and “failed” spectacularly, almost in the Nietzschean sense of transvaluation of values in that the construction of a vast and sophisticated state apparatus, the ultimate youwei project, is construed as a wuwei product that is supposed to operate naturally, just like Heaven.
