ABSTRACT
In Origins of Totalitarianism , Hannah Arendt argued that the "subterranean history" of Antisemitism, Imperialism, and Totalitarianism constituted an attack on the "dignity" of the Western tradition. This paper proceeds by developing four interlinked claims from this Arendtian insight. One, Arendt links the moral consequences of these developments to dignity because they undermine human plurality. Hence, and two, diminishing human dignity jeopardizes the disclosive attributes of political action, which is, for Arendt, one of the distinctive contributions of the Western tradition. Three, since this attack on dignity arose due to the failures of the national state, its solution is a transnational "guarantee" to secure rights. This guarantee must be transnational because it is premised on the world-transformative consequences of the "subterranean history". Four, Arendt's solution is rooted in an "elemental shame" that opens the way to a politics that secures human dignity through transnational solidarity. Shame, therefore, is a response proper to the West’s "subterranean history".
