● Kant held that while the ideal, rightful form of a state is republican, any state in the proper sense has to meet some appealing conditions that make it civil if not rightful. This lecture explores that same idea, although not in Kant's own terms, arguing that any civil state will foreshadow, if not approximate, the ideal of a full republic.

康德认为尽管国家的理想和正当形式是一个共和国，但是任何一个恰当意义上的国家都要满足某些具有吸引力的条件，使其成为文明国家，哪怕不是正当国家。本讲考察了同样的理念，尽管不是用康德自己的术语，但是认为任何一个文明国家都将预示（如果不是近似的话）一个完全的共和国的理想。
