ABSTRACT
Leadership and honour are mutually constitutive so that this dynamic relationship fundamentally shapes political practice. This view of honour was familiar in classical thought, with its conception of magnanimity, and modernity, where gloria was considered an important passion for understanding the theory and practice of modern constitutionalism. Yet contemporary scholarship, founded on power and interest tends to neglect the importance of the leadership-honour dynamic. This presentation traces such neglect to one of its seminal sources, Thomas Hobbes's political thought that saw glory as a pathology and sought to extirpate it to secure peaceful and prosperous modern state. It argues that Hobbes adopts many of Machiavelli's insights while rejecting the crucial importance of gloria for politics. It explores the implications of such depreciation of honour for the contemporary understanding of leadership and politics.
