ABSTRACT
This chapter investigates the concept of family in classical Hindu philosophy as a site of moral formation and moral danger. It treats the household as a central arena of dharma in which competing values must be sustained together without slipping into ethical failure. Family life, on this view, is not secured by affection alone, and its moral vulnerability does not depend solely on formal hierarchy. Its characteristic risks arise from the same sources as its goods. Attachment, loyalty, intimacy, and authority can sustain care, yet they can also congeal into possessiveness, coercion, and harm. The guiding question concerns how classical Hindu thought seeks to discipline the moral force of kinship so that care remains distinct from domination. The chapter develops three claims. First, classical texts frame the gṛhastha āśrama as an ethically demanding form of life in which duty, affection, sacrifice, and social continuity are deliberately integrated. The household appears as a structured practice through which agents learn to negotiate competing demands and to cultivate practical moral judgement. Second, the idiom of ṛṇa, or debt, offers a distinctive account of obligation that is asymmetrical and not grounded in contract. It treats care as emerging from inherited dependence and the recognition of what one has received. Because debts can be interpreted, re-specified, and discharged across time, the framework permits ethical revision of relationships while resisting both voluntarist reduction and permanent subordination. Third, the ideal of anāsakti, or non-possessive attachment, functions as an internal discipline for familial life. It reorients kinship toward responsibility without ownership, connection without control, and devotion without coercive entitlement. In doing so, it offers a practical and spiritual approach to sustaining care while minimising the moral distortions to which intimacy is prone. By situating these themes alongside contemporary debates about care, dependency, and non-domination, the chapter brings Hindu philosophical resources into wider conversations about the moral psychology of family feeling. It proposes that the classical household ethic is best understood as a principled ambivalence. Family life remains essential to human flourishing, yet it is persistently vulnerable to moral corruption, and thus demands ongoing practices of restraint, discernment, and ethical reorientation.
