ABSTRACT
This chapter challenges a dominant strand of contemporary Confucian political ethics that treats civic and political ideals as an extension of moral virtues cultivated within the family. Drawing on Aristotle’s distinction between moral virtue formed in the household and civic virtue shaped through political rule, it argues that moral dispositions grounded primarily in family feeling cannot be automatically conferred as publicly approvable civilities. For such familial characteristics to be appropriate to political rule among free and equal citizens, institutional mediation and regulation are required to render them publicly justifiable. More specifically, the chapter proceeds in three steps. First, by analyzing Aristotle’s account of marital rule as distinct from paternal rule within the household, it shows that familial relationships cannot, by themselves, be identified with political rule. Second, by examining Aristotle’s account of child education—conceived as oriented toward the politeia and treated as a public concern—it argues that the family’s role in cultivating deliberative capacity is pedagogical and transitional, rather than already proto-political or fully political in itself. Finally, by juxtaposing Aristotle’s treatment of education as a public affair with his insistence on the distinction between moral cultivation in the family and civic virtue exercised through political rule, the chapter maintains that, without institutional regulation, family feeling—even as the primary source of moral formation—cannot serve as a sufficient foundation for a healthy democratic civility.
