ABSTRACT

Does morality require the filial obligation of grown children towards their aged parents? If the answer is negative, why is this so? If the answer is affirmative, then on what basis is this obligation founded? In this chapter, I will examine some theories of filial morality, both positive and negative, and problematize them. I will then turn to Confucianism and show how it provides a sensible alternative perspective. In Confucian ethics, filiality is an important part of becoming a person of ren. A good life, in the Confucian view, is a journey to become a morally cultivated person. By practicing filial morality, one becomes better cultivated in virtue, deeply related to other people, and more fulfilled in a rich and meaningful life.

摘要

道德是否要求成年子女对他们的年迈父母负有孝的义务？若答案是否定的，其理据何在？若答案是肯定的，则此种义务的基础为何？在本章中，我将检视若干关于孝之道德性的理论（其中既有肯定性的，也有否定性的），并对它们提出质疑。随后，我将转向儒家思想，并阐明其如何提供了一种合理的替代性视角。在儒家伦理中，孝是成为“仁”人的重要部分。儒家视域下的良善生活是一条成为有道德修养之人的旅途。通过践行孝的道德性，一个人能够获得更好的德性修养，与他人更紧密地互系，并在丰富而有意义的生活中感到更加满足。
