In this talk I return to a topic that was discussed by Gil Harman in the 1970s: unpossessed evidence.  While Harman argued that there are cases in which unpossessed evidence undermines one's knowledge, I argue that his analysis of these cases is unacceptable, and that they are better understood as cases in which unpossessed evidence undermines one's justification.  To make sense of this proposal I argue that in these scenarios we have normative expectations about the evidence that the subject has, and that these expectations can defeat the justification of a belief that would otherwise be justified.  These cases are cases of what we might call 'social defeat.'
