ABSTRACT
In this lecture, I propose to think of ‘the individual’ as an open-ended and fluid notion vis-à-vis the liberal view of society as a community of self-interested, atomic individuals. To do so, I will first call attention to two different Korean translations of the term, which emerged at the turn of the twentieth century when reformist Korean writers started imagining new personhood. One translation is “paeksŏng,” a sinographic plural noun whose literal meaning is “a hundred surnames” and traditionally refers to “the people without government ranks.” The other is “soksaram,” which means ‘inner person,’ a neologism that first appeared in some early Korean translations of the Bible. The first stresses individuality’s innately collective dimension as a universal human right, whereas the second highlights a secluded inner space singularly governed by each person. The second part of the lecture will focus on how early colonial Korean fiction writers tried to resolve the tension between paeksŏng and soksaram while exploring some short stories and novels published between 1906 and 1918.
