ABSTRACT

Amid the prominence of the “Indo-Pacific” framework, another oceanic spatial construct often goes overlooked. I examine the concept of “Oceania” as developed by indigenous and local intellectuals from the late twentieth-century post-independence Pacific Islands region. These intellectuals frequently characterized Oceania as an anticolonial and regenerative space, a realm for substantive decolonization and the realization of Pacific peoples’ self-determination against global structural injustices. I give particular attention to the work of Epeli Hau‘ofa (1939–2009),a Tongan-Fijian indigenous intellectual, author of the influential essay “Our Sea of Islands” (1993), and a prominent architect of the Oceania concept.By analysing Hau‘ofa’s  distinctive reformulation of this concept, I argue that he was among the most distinguished anticolonial political theorists from the Pacific basin.

摘   要

在“印度-太平洋”框架受到重视的背景下，另有一个海洋空间构想往往被忽视。本文考察的“大洋洲”（Oceania）这一概念由20世纪晚期太平洋岛国独立后的原住民及当地知识分子们提出。这些知识分子经常将大洋洲描绘为一个反殖民主义并具有再生能力的空间，一个实质性去殖民化并实现太平洋地区人民自决权的领域，对抗着全球结构性不公正。本文将重点分析汤加-斐济原住民知识分子Epeli Hau‘ofa（1939-2009）的著作，他著有颇具影响力的文章《我们的岛屿之海》（1993），被认为是大洋洲概念的主要构建者之一。通过分析Hau‘ofa对这一概念的独特重新诠释，本文认为他是来自太平洋盆地的、最杰出的反殖民政治理论家之一。
