ABSTRACT
In Spinoza’s philosophical system, indignation is categorized as a sad passion, associated with hatred and thus indicative of powerlessness. However, in the Political Treatise (1677), this affect seems to acquire a different role, as Spinoza links it to the desire for justice, grounding it in the love of liberty. This apparent paradox can be understood through Spinoza’s concept of jus as an expression of potentia: the right of each individual corresponds to their capacity to act and resist. This talk explores the role of indignation in Spinoza’s political thought, questioning how it can represent not merely a reactive emotion but also an expression of collective potentia. What is the relationship between indignation and justice in the establishment of the State? How does this affect connect to the innate desire for liberty and the capacity for resistance against tyrannical rule? By examining key passages of the Political Treatise, I propose an interpretation of indignation not solely as a sign of impotence but as an affect that arises within the tension between individual potentia and political order, illuminating the interplay of affects, right, and justice in Spinoza’s philosophy.
