ABSTRACT

In this talk I will sketch the outlines of my history of liberalism. The book charts the historical development of liberalism in response to the characteristic fears and hopes of Western liberals since the late eighteenth century. It shows how liberal arguments typically rely on three pillars: freedom, markets, and morals, or politics, economics, and morality/religion, to create bulwarks against fear and support for the liberal goal of a world in which no one need be afraid. When liberals ignore one or more pillars, their arguments fail to convince. The book combines accounts of well-known thinkers including Tocqueville and Rawls with discussion of less-known but pivotal actors such as A. V. Dicey and Jane Addams. Extending from Adam Smith and Montesquieu to today’s encounters between liberals and populists, the book examines the twists and turns of the liberal tradition while demonstrating its fundamental continuity. The examinations of liberal thinkers are supplemented by discussions of how liberals have dealt with crucial issues, such as the relationship of liberalism to colonialism and nationalism, or liberal anti-Catholicism.

在这次讲座中，我将概述我对自由主义历史的基本勾勒。这本书（《免于恐惧的自由：一部不完整的自由主义史》）讲述了十八世纪末以来的自由主义的发展历史，该发展基于对西方自由主义者所特有的恐惧与希望的回应。本书表明自由主义的诸多论证常常依赖三大支柱：自由、市场与道德，或者说政治、经济与道德（或宗教），以构筑抵御恐惧的堡垒，以及支持自由主义的目标——一个无人需要感到恐惧的世界。当自由主义者忽视其中一个或者多个支柱时，他们的诸多论证便难以让人信服。此外，本书结合了托克维尔、罗尔斯等著名思想家的论述与对A. V. 戴西、 简·亚当斯等较少为人所知、但却相当关键的人物的讨论。从亚当·斯密和孟德斯鸠开始，直至今日自由主义者和民粹主义者的对垒，本书考察了自由主义传统中的曲折与转变，同时证明了其基本的连续性。关于自由主义者如何处理诸多关键性议题的讨论则补充了对自由主义思想家的考察，这些议题包括了自由主义与殖民主义和民族主义之间的关系，以及自由主义的反天主教主义等。
