ABSTRACT
Japan was the first country in East Asia to enter the transition to modernization. Beginning in the Meiji era, a cohort of intellectuals encountered Western ideas, particularly those promoting egalitarian and peaceful societies, which they fervently embraced. This led to the birth of socialism in Japan, with figures like Nakae Chomin, Kotoku Shusui, Osugi Sakae, and Sakai Toshihiko playing prominent roles. Despite their diverse personalities and fates, these thinkers collectively left indelible marks on Japanese intellectual history. Their socialist ideologies weren't mere stepping stones to Marxism; rather, they constituted a profound examination of the inherent contradictions within capitalist societies. Of particular note is their struggle to reconcile deterministic societal views with individual freedom and to find a universal bond of solidarity beyond nationalism. These existential dilemmas remain relevant today, underscoring the enduring importance of reexamining early Japanese socialist thought to glean insights for the future.
