Announcement

The 5th Annual Conference of East Asian Network for Phenomenology

The East Asian Network for Phenomenology is an academic society founded in the year of 2015, Shanghai, China. The main goal of the network is to promote academic exchange about phenomenology within East Asian scholars, especially among young phenomenologists. The East Asian Network for Phenomenology holds an international conference every year and we welcome contributions that cover phenomenological tradition in a broad sense (Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, Paul Sartre, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Emmanuel Levinas, etc.). The first conference took place in 2016 in Shanghai, China, the second one in 2017 in Sapporo, Japan, the third one in 2018 in Hsinchu, Taiwan, and fourth one in 2019 in Seoul, Korea. The fifth annual conference was initially scheduled to venue in 2020 in Zhuhai, China, but it had to be postponed due to the sudden outbreak of COVID-19.

We are glad to announce that the 5th annual conference of the East Asian Network for Phenomenology will take place on the 2nd – 3rd of November, 2024, organized by the Department of Philosophy (Zhuhai), Sun Yat-sen University, China, as a part of series events celebrating the 100th anniversary of Sun Yat-sen University and the 30th anniversary of the Chinese Society for Phenomenology. The theme of the conference is about “Phenomenology and Emotional Life.” Emotions plays a crucial role in human life. They not only color our experiences in daily life but also reveal the world and objects therein as if they appear through a lens of valence such that they look appealing in positive emotions and distancing away in negative ones. In recent years, we have witnessed a rapidly growing amount of literature on the nature of emotions in philosophy, psychology, and affective sciences. With this conference, we will draw together analyses of emotions from a phenomenological perspective, so as to show how feelings, emotions, moods, affects impact our experience of the world at different layers; and we will also explore specific kinds of emotions such as depression, collective feelings, etc. In addition, we will also cover theoretical themes such as Husserl’s conception of Ur-Ich, the issue of representationalism in Husserl, cognitive phenomenology, and phenomenological methodologies, and so forth.

With these rich contributions from mainland China, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan, we hope to resume the annual meeting of the East Asian Network for Phenomenology, so that we can further strengthen academic communication and cooperation within the region.
