ABSTRACT
The aim of this article is to explain the paradox of the exacerbated impact of shaming, from bullying to various types of internet shaming, public shaming, etc., in a world otherwise accused of increased shamelessness. I argue that a particular form of shamelessness may, as a matter of fact, increase the efficiency of a particular form of shaming, sometimes with devastating consequences. To support this claim, I use yet another puzzle: Why did Epictetus – the first Stoic to make shame a key feature of his philosophy and pedagogy – choose to ignore that many of the same accusations he leveled against the Epicureans applied equally well to the Cynics he praised so much? Despite the differences between the two schools, the type of shamelessness promoted by the Cynics and Epicureans opens the doors for the only authority left to be feared—the authority of numbers. I call this “the notoriety trap.”
