Abstract:

It is a common complaint, particularly in the U.S., that politicians are shameless in their willingness to lie. For example, Manu Samnotra opens his recent book, Worldly Shame , with a quotation from former U.S. president Barack Obama, which states, "we see the utter loss of shame among political leaders where they're caught in a lie... and they just lie some more" (2020, vii). Although it might be clear that lying is morally wrong, it is not clear why lying might be considered shameless. In this chapter, I draw on both Kant and Mengzi to show the close connection between shame, righteous, and honesty. My discussion raises the following additional question: why might it be particularly concerning for politicians to shamelessly lie? Is there some difference between the shameless lie of a private citizen and the shameless lie of a public official? I argue that shameless lying in politics is serious because the publicity of the lie is especially obvious.  A public servant's shameless lie demonstrates her willingness to violate a core moral commitment in the public eye.
