ABSTRACT:

This study focuses on the state of “wu 惡” (loathing) in Mencius’s conception xiu wu zhi xin 羞惡之心 (the heart/mind of embarrassment and loathing) and attempts to analyse why Mencius picks out wu as one of the feelings that indicate the presence of goodness in us. I will first consider the contrast between liking or feeling neutral about the bad on one hand and loathing the bad on the other. The contrast should make it vivid that we need to invoke modality to understand why loathing the bad is good. It is only when one is capable of loathing the bad that we can tell that one likes what is good. Then, I will address whether the presence of loathing always indicates something good. I will argue that loathing can only be elicited when one thinks that something is bad. Loathing cannot be taken toward something that one thinks is neutral – neither bad nor good. Hence, those who loathe are already attracted to what is good. The final section considers the connection of the proposed interpretation of wu with xiu (embarrassment) and discusses its implications for our understanding of shame (broadly construed) in Mencius’s thought.

本文主要研究孟子的“羞恶之心”的概念中“恶”的状态，并尝试分析为什么孟子把“恶”选作一种能够表明我们心中存在“善”的感情。 首先，笔者一方面考察了喜欢坏的事物和对坏的事物保持中立之间的对比，另一方面考察了对坏的事物的厌恶。 这种对比生动地说明我们需要援引“模态”（modality）来理解为什么厌恶坏的事物是善的。 只有当一个人能够厌恶坏的事物时，我们才能知道他喜欢善的东西。 然后，笔者将讨论厌恶的存在是否总是指出善的事物。 笔者认为，只有当一个人认为某事物是坏的时，厌恶才会被引发。 厌恶不能导向一个人认为是中性的事物——既不好也不坏的事物。 因此，那些厌恶的人已被善的东西所吸引。 最后一节讨论了笔者提出的对“恶”的解读与“羞”的联系，并讨论了它对我们理解孟子思想中的“羞（广义解释）”的影响。
