ABSTRACT:

In this talk, I suggest that some people can be said to be unfree merely because they feel unfree, when that feeling is based on an excusable error. Excusable errors can be traced to those dominating social norms that attribute power to classes of people, even when most members of those classes do not, in fact, have such power. This allows me to sketch a new analysis of contemporary forms of racial and gender domination, including those brought to light by movements such as Black Lives Matter and Me Too. Such domination, I argue, makes (some) people unfree, even when they are (in fact) not subjected to arbitrary power. In addition to providing a novel diagnosis of pervasive modes of social domination in our seemingly free societies, the talk advances reflection on the concept of domination, by explicating the role of the psychology of unfreedom.

在本讲中，我认为有些人之所以可以说是不自由的，仅仅是因为他们感觉不自由，而这种感觉是基于一个可辩解的错误。 这种可辩解的错误可以追溯到那些将权力赋予不同阶层的支配性社会规范，即使这些阶层的大多数成员实际上并不拥有这种权力。 这使我能够对种族和性别支配的当代形式，包括那些被诸如“黑人的命也是命”和“我也是”等运动所揭示的形式进行新的分析。 我认为，这种支配使(一些)人不自由，即使他们(实际上)没有受到专制权力的统治。 除了对我们这个看似自由的社会中普遍存在的社会支配模式进行新的诊断外，本讲将通过阐释心理上的不自由的影响，推进对支配概念的反思。
