This talk will discuss my recent book, Dreamworlds of Race: Empire and the Utopian Destiny of Anglo-America , which explores visions of racial unity and world order at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth. In the first part of the talk I outline the main arguments of the book, focusing in particular on some key themes: the role of communications technologies in reshaping the political imagination and visions of world order, shifting ideas about race, and conceptions of international law, war, democracy, citizenship, patriotism, and empire. In the second part of the talk, I focus on one chapter in particular, discussing how many political thinkers at the time believed that the political unification of Britain and the United States could bring peace to the earth – I argue that this was a prominent variant of what I term “racial utopianism.”

本讲将讨论我最近出版的书《种族的梦幻世界： 帝国与盎格鲁美洲的乌托邦命运》。 该书探讨了十九世纪末二十世纪初对种族团结与世界秩序的愿景。 本讲第一部分，我将概述这本书的主要论点，并特别关注一些关键主题： 通信技术在重塑对世界秩序的政治想象和愿景中的作用，关于种族观念的改变，以及国际法、战争、民主、公民身份、爱国主义和帝国的概念。 本讲第二部分，我将聚焦本书中的一章，讨论当时有多少政治思想家认为英国与美国的政治统一可以给地球带来和平——我认为这种想象是我所说的“种族乌托邦主义”的突出变体。
