ABSTRACT:

In European thought, the classical problem of evil is about God – how could an omnipotent and perfectly good God make a world that has evil in it?  While this problem is not significant in early China, a similar problem emerges in the tension between two mottoes: “the unity of heaven and human” (tianrenheyi 天人合一), and, “the division between heaven and human” (tianrenzhifen 天人之分).  This lecture will begin with some of the methodological challenges of linking these two problems.  It will then briefly discuss the early Zhou doctrine of the “Mandate of Heaven” (tianming 天命) and its breakdown in the Spring and Autumn Period.  The rest of the lecture will consider how various Chinese philosophers responded to this changing view of heaven, concentrating on Mengzi and Zhuangzi.

　　在欧洲思想中，经典的恶的问题是关于上帝的——一个全能并完美的上帝怎会创造出一个有恶的世界呢？ 尽管这个问题在早期中国意义并不重大，但一个相似的问题却在“天人合一”与“天人之分”之间的张力中涌现了出来。 本讲首先介绍一些将这两个问题联系起来的方法论挑战，继而简要地讨论周初的天命学说及其在春秋时期的瓦解。 本讲剩余的部分将讨论不同的中国哲学家如何回应这种变化的天道观，重点关注孟子和庄子。
