ABSTRACT

The aim of this talk is to account for an approach to cross-cultural comparison of political discourses in two or more different traditions. I propose to deploy a cognitive theory of metaphor in the historical analysis of metaphorical discourses on politics. To illustrate this method, my paper will compare the discourses on the metaphor of the body politic, which reveals that bodily and medical imageries of politics are determined metaphorically by tacit knowledge about human body and medical science that is specific to relevant cultural tradition of the time. This example thus shows that cross-cultural metaphor analysis comprises a reconstruction of intellectual—i.e. medical—context, in which political conceptualisation takes place in the relevant cultural traditions. The presentation will argue that the proposed method has an affinity with the Pocockian contextualist focus on ‘languages’. Various types of metaphor serve as the window for a range of intellectual contexts that informed political conceptualisation at the level of culturally distinct imageries.

摘要

本讲座旨在阐明对两种或者多种不同传统进行政治话语跨文化比较的一种处理路径。我提出一种隐喻的认知理论，可以运用于政治隐喻话语的历史分析。为了阐明这种方法，本讲座将比较人们关于政治体这一隐喻的论述，表明人们关于政治的身体和医术比喻，是由他们关于人类身体和医学的默会知识，以一种隐喻的方式决定的，这是一种与那个时代文化传统相关的特定知识。因此，这个例子表明：跨文化的隐喻分析包含了思想语境（比如医学知识）的重构，正是在这种重构中，相关文化传统中形成了对政治的概念化。本讲座将论证，上述进路同波考克式的语境主义者关注“语言”的方法类似。诸多类型的隐喻作为一系列思想语境的窗口，在独特的文化意象层面启发了对政治的概念化。
