Abstract: The theory of liberty as non-domination in neo-Roman republicanism is contrasted with consent based approaches and, importantly, with approaches that rely on hypothetical priority of individual rights in liberalism. This talk will examine the arguments put forward in favour of the ‘contestability’ theory in Philip Pettit’s On The People’s Terms: A Republican Theory and Model of Democracy (2012). A particular focus will be to ask whether Pettit’s theory of legitimacy can avoid the kinds of hypothetical judgments attributed to political liberalism.

摘要：新罗马共和主义非支配自由理论，不同于基于同意并依赖个人权利优先之假定的自由主义理论。本次讲座将探讨佩蒂特在《以人民的名义：共和主义的民主理论和模型》一书中用以支持其“牵制力”理论的相关论述。尤为关注于佩蒂特的合法性理论可否避免归因于政治自由主义的假设性判断。
