Comparative Philosophy Workshop
The Classical Confucian Ideas of Jus ad Bellum,由我系郭峻赫教授(Jun-Hyeok Kwak)主持,主讲人为来自南开大学的曹钦教授。

我系研究员Dr.Beaumont,Dr.Roderigues、黄梦晓博士和同学们也进行了提问,展开了热烈的讨论。

Comparative Philosophy Workshop (III):The Classical Confucian Ideas of Jus ad Bellum
On the 17th of December 20, 2016, the Department of Philsophy (Zhuhai), Sun Yat-sen University hosted Associate Professor Cao Qin from Nankai University for the 3rd comparative philosophy workshop of the semester.
Professor Kwak Jun-Hyeok served as moderator and introduced Associate Professor Cao as a close associate of the Department in that he was a former colleague of Professor Chen Jianhong and had recently contributed a chapter to a book that Dr. Luis Rodrigeus was editing. Then Associate Professor Cao presented his paper “Classical Confucian Ideas of Jus ad Bellum,” which made two key claims: 1. both Confucius and Mencius hold a consequentialist view of just of war, and 2. Mencius’s theory of just of war in particular proves to lighten the burden of defending the necessity of humanitarian interventions.
Serving as a commentator, Dr. Zhida LUO posted several questions concerning the methodology of comparing Confucianist approach of just of war and its contemporary counterparts. He questioned the basic goal of the paper and asked whether it aimed to give a systematic interpretation of Confucian and Mencian views of just of war or defend a Confucianist alternative to contemporary theories of just of war. And He also questioned the applicability of Confucian ideas of sheji (社稷,the state) to modern understanding of sovereign states. Associate Professor Cao replied by emphasizing the relevance and significance of Confucian thought and its possible bearing on contemporary understanding of human right. Professor Kwak followed up by further distinguishing three types of just of war. Dr. Tim Beaumont raised questions how Confucian theory might see the tension between individual right and collective right if the status of human condition was a fundamental factor of humanitarian intervention. Dr. Luis Rodrigeus and Dr. He Bao-shen enquired what Associate Professor Cao’s position precisely was and the methodology he was practicing. Dr. Huang Mengxiao raised a broader question concerning the relation between the rule of Heaven and the rule of humanity in Confucian tradition.
Prof. Kwak concluded the workshop by emphasizing the difficulty and importance of doing comparative philosophy, especially when doing a comparison between Chinese and western philosophy. And he looked forward to seeing further development of the paper presented given fruitful and productive enchantment of thoughts on Confucian thought of Jus ad Bellem.
