Abstract

It is an old and persistent complaint about ancient ethics that it fails to display the sort of impartiality found in modern moral theory. Many ancient Greek philosophy scholars think that it is obviously the case that ancient Greek philosophical thought is not impartial in the way that most modern moral philosophy is, but recently several have argued that such criticism is unfair in various ways. The present talk is part of a larger project on Plato on practical rationality. In particular, examining the evidence that can be found there for Plato’s commitment to impartiality and to some central features of consequentialism, I argue that we do find strong indications of some basic features of consequentialism in the form of a restricted sort of good maximization as a criterion for good laws and political institutions.

摘要：对古代伦理未曾体现见诸现代道德理论中的“公正”之抱怨，古已有之、经久不衰。古希腊哲学家们的“公正”概念显然并非现代意义上的“公正”，近来，诸多学者却认为如上批评在多个方面有失公允。作为“柏拉图论实践理性”项目的一部分，此讲检验对柏拉图持守“公正”和某些后果论中心特征的证明。我认为我们的确可以找到证据强有力地显示其具有后果论的基本特点，亦即在一定程度上，将“善”的最大化，作为法律及政治制度好坏的判断标准。
