Abstract: Over the last sixty years, the principle of fair play has been worked into a theory of political obligation, which is often viewed as one of the strongest, if not the strongest, in the literature.  The most promising version of fair play theory is "non-voluntarist,” claiming that obligations can be grounded in receipt of benefits that are not accepted. But in spite of generally positive reception, this theory has been strongly criticized.  In this paper, I examine the most important criticisms.
